With rare exception (and regardless of brand) an active direct box will sound better than a passive direct box every time. The SGDB1 is a quality active direct box--or Direct Injection Box, as they call it. It features both XLR and Quarter Inch Input and Output, a 20db Pad, and a ground lift for when you run into that annoying hum.

The SGDB1 requires either phantom power (pretty much standard on every mixer nowadays) or a 9volt battery.

Don't lose your tone to a passive direct box; carry your own active direct box for bass, keyboards, dj mixer, drum machine, effects, or any other application where you need to change the impedance or otherwise send your audio signal a long distance.
